A new NIEHS-funded study reports that when a pregnant woman is exposed to chlorpyrifos, a commonly used pesticide, her child’s developing brain may be damaged, leading to lowered intelligence.

“The prenatal period is a vulnerable time for the developing child, and that toxic exposure during this critical period can have far-reaching effects on brain development and behavioral functioning,” said NIEHS grantee Virginia Rauh, Sc.D., a professor at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. “We have demonstrated that there is a relatively monotonic dose-response effect, suggesting that some small effects occur at even very low exposures.”

The evidence comes from researchers who conducted a recent brain imaging study of children exposed prenatally to chlorpyrifos. In addition to Columbia University scientists, the team included researchers affiliated with Duke University Medical Center, Emory University, and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. ...

Normally I wouldn't even waste my time on imbeciles like "My hovercraft is full of eels", but I suppose I found it hard to believe that ANYONE could be THAT ignorant.

This anonymous coward actually credited GMOs for extending our life expectancy while it's ACTUALLY going down!

"Nothing to do with harmless GMOs or highly beneficial vaccinations. A life expectancy of 78 is a 50% increase in only a hundred years."

And that is just so typical for trolls, completely ignoring reality.

I have hosted several young people with terrible allergies. One was 20 years old and couldn't eat anything with gluten, corn, soy, peanuts, tree nuts ... He had a burger at a local restaurant and was stuck in the bathroom for 6 hours the next day. Restaurants around here use the cheapest oil they can find: corn, soy, canola -- all GMO. And that's what made him so sick.

Of course it's not just the GMOs causing painful chronic gut problems and all sorts of "new" autoimmune diseases, but vaccines, pesticides and herbicides are all part of the problem.

I just watched Episode 2 of The Human Longevity Project, a very well done documentary.

It is quite scientific and I learned a lot. Of course Eel gal didn't even watch it and judging by her comments, has an IQ below 70 and wouldn't have understood most of the issues discussed by the doctors and experts.

https://humanlongevityfilm.com/

Free this week and I hope they eventually put it on Netflix, like so many other fantastic food documentaries.

It's good to see so many doctors are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and recommend organic or at least GMO free food to their patients.

Also got to watch The Food Cure recently and it is astounding how people with stage 3 cancer changed their diet to only organic veggies and they were CURED. It takes a lot of money for the organics and also supplements to help the liver (you could die from liver damage when tumors dissolve so fast). Most important is SUPPORT -- it's a full-time job to eat to get well.

It's much easier to PREVENT getting sick -- don't eat any GMOs, eat organic when you can and grow as much food as you can!

... Dr. Michael Hansen, a Senior Scientist at Consumers Union, the policy arm of Consumer Reports, wrote, “While genome editing has been portrayed in the media as an incredibly precise process, where one can go in and literally only intentionally change one or a small number of nucleotide bases, the reality is that there can be large numbers of off-target effects.” He says, “This study raises troubling concerns.”

Another recently published study in Nature Communications used CRISPR/Cas9 to make 17 edits in the mouse genome. They too sequenced the genome and found unexpected insertions and deletions in all 17 places. Whereas deletions of approximately 9 base pairs are predicted, the actual size of the deletions was as high as 600 base pairs. No computer model predicts DNA damage this extensive.

A third study published this year also found deletions of more than 500 base units. The researchers also confirmed that proteins produced by these mutated sections were altered. Such changes could theoretically transform a beneficial protein to a harmful one. ...

Dr. Kevin Folta just doesn't know when to quit!

From Kevin Folta in bed with fake nurse:

At the end of last year, the University of Florida scientist Kevin Folta promoted a new Twitter account called @askepticalnurse (see image above).

What happened next is chronicled in Unhealthy Advice: The Mysterious Case of the Disappearing Nurse.

The long and the short of it is that Folta's “nurse” turned out to be someone who has worked as a “cosmetologist” - someone trained in hairdressing, nail care or makeup - with a delinquent licence as a nursing assistant.

When her identity and lack of nursing qualifications were flagged up on Twitter, some rapid housecleaning led to the deletion of a whole series of related social media accounts.

Why the panic? The trail of the unqualified nurse leads directly to Kevin Folta's door.

@askepticalnurse is Roxanne Porozinski who, it turns out, has had a hairdressing business at an address she shares with Folta. Roxanne and Folta also go to the same dojo and are in the same cycling club.

Also listed at exactly the same address is one “Roxanne Folta”. As it is a little improbable Kevin Folta would be cohabiting with two women called Roxanne, it seems a reasonable assumption that Roxanne Porozinski and Roxanne Folta are one and the same.

....

How can the university condone this?

A sign of the times and just goes to prove how corrupt universities are.

Why the Health of Your Mitochondria Matters

As explained by Vasquez, in addition to producing most of your body’s energy in the form of ATP, your mitochondria also participate in many other processes, such as cellular signaling.

According to Vasquez, the data is “impressively clear” that those with type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and high blood pressure have dysfunctional mitochondria.

Your mitochondria also play an important role in inflammation, and control apoptosis (cell death). These two roles make your mitochondria a player in diseases such as cancer, for example, as damaged cells fail to receive the message to self-destruct, and therefore continue their malignant growth.

Vasquez — who is an expert on inflammation — divides inflammation into three different forms, which exist on a continuum and overlap each other:

Metabolic inflammation (conditions such as hypertension and diabetes)

Allergic inflammation

Autoimmune inflammation

Chronic, low-level inflammation, which tends to underlie most chronic health conditions, he describes as “metabolic disturbance with cellular injury.” While mitochondrial dysfunction is involved in virtually ALL disease, the following bears mentioning, as they’re among the most common:

Summary describing some of the deplorable industry practices:

Fraud

One example:

Monsanto's submission to Australian regulators on their high lysine GM corn provides several examples of optimistic assumptions used in place of science. The GM protein produced in the corn is also found in soil. The company claimed that since people consume small residues of soil on fruits and vegetables, the protein has a history of safe consumption. An independent calculation by the Centre for Integrated Research on Biosafety (INBI), however, reveals the weakness of this argument. Based on the amount of GM corn protein an average US citizen would consume (if all their corn were Monsanto's variety),"for equivalent exposure" of the protein from soil "people would have to eat between 80-800 million (males) or 60-700 million (females) kilograms of soil each day, or nearly as much as 10,000kg/second 24 hours a day seven days a week." INBI estimated that the normal exposure to the protein from soil residues was actually "about 30 billion-4 trillion times less than exposure through [high lysine] corn."[10]

In addition, certain nutritional components of this GM variety (i.e. protein content, total dietary fiber, acid detergent fiber, and neutral detergent fiber) lie far outside the normal range for corn. Instead of comparing their corn to normal controls, which would reveal this disparity, Monsanto compared it to obscure corn varieties that were also substantially outside the normal range on precisely these values.

I just don't understand how they can get away with that!

WASHINGTON, July 14, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A new study published today in the peer-reviewed journal AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES reveals genetic engineering of soy disrupts the plant's natural ability to control stress, and invalidates the FDA's current regulatory framework of "substantial equivalence" used for approval of genetically engineered food (GMOs).

The study, led by Dr. V.A.
ABSTRACT

Safety assessment of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is a contentious topic. Proponents of GMOs assert that GMOs are safe since the FDA’s policy of substantial equivalence considers GMOs “equivalent” to their non-GMO counterparts, and argue that genetic modification (GM) is simply an extension of a “natural” process of plant breeding, a form of “genetic modification”, though done over longer time scales. Anti-GMO activists counter that GMOs are unsafe since substantial equivalence is unscientific and outdated since it originates in the 1970s to assess safety of medical devices, which are not comparable to the complexity of biological systems, and contend that targeted GM is not plant breeding. The heart of the debate appears to be on the methodology used to determine criteria for substantial equivalence. Systems biology, which aims to understand complexity of the whole organism, as a system, rather than just studying its parts in a reductionist manner, may provide a framework to determine appropriate criteria, as it recognizes that GM, small or large, may affect emergent properties of the whole system. Herein, a promising computational systems biology method couples known perturbations on five biomolecules caused by the CP4 EPSPS GM of Glycine max L. (soybean), with an integrative model of C1 metabolism and oxidative stress (two molecular systems critical to plant function). The results predict significant accumulation of formaldehyde and concomitant depletion of glutathione in the GMO, suggesting how a “small” and single GM creates “large” and systemic perturbations to molecular systems equilibria. Regulatory agencies, currently reviewing rules for GMO safety, may wish to adopt a systems biology approach using a combination of in silico, computational methods used herein, and subsequent targeted experimental in vitro and in vivo designs, to develop a systems understanding of “equivalence” using biomarkers, such as formaldehyde and glutathione, which predict metabolic disruptions, towards modernizing the safety assessment of GMOs.
