And a great beginner's fermenting video including how to make Sriracha -- I didn't even know it is fermented.

I went back to coco coir for the seedling, don't care if a little coir end up in the water. It works so well to start boatloads of seedling in the 10 / 20 trays and then transplant into the net pots.

It's also nice that I can reuse the coco coir as I shake the seedlings a little and most falls back into the tray.

It never occurred to me that this scam would be advertised as HEALTHY food and NOT be organic and GMO free.

And you get SO little, I'd have to spend at least $500/month in summer and my health would take a SERIOUS downturn (CRS, probably early Alzheimers).

For the $5 shipping I could have bought a BIG box of Alden organic ice cream and while I'm trying to get off sugar, I believe the Alden ice cream is healthier than Fit Freeze. Alden wasn't an option anymore -- I'm DONE poisoning myself with sugar.

So I bought an ice cream maker and I'm looking forward to making both dairy and non dairy ice cream with Erithritol. I love that stuff, non GMO and a fantastic natural sugar substitute.

I eat a box of whipped cream (OF COURSE organic!) sweetened with Erithritol about every two days -- and I actually lost weight (42 barely fit when I quit ice cream in summer 2018, comfortable in 38 now) -- without even trying!

Here is the Fit Freeze order page, with the fraudulent advertising of the FREE Fit Freeze while

https://fitfreeze.com/ffs/free-samples.php

When you see ANY of those long sales pitches, you should simply CLOSE the window. Often that will get you a better deal, but I'm determined to NOT BUY any products that are advertised in this obnoxious manner.

If you do get suckered, take it public!

I had set up a tub for a customer/friend on her patio on a shelf next to the house. It was AMAZING how the plants thrived, the lettuce was going NUTS! Despite several high wind days the plants did fantastic and the only problem was that one plant got blown out of the tub. So that's something to consider, somehow securing the net pots so they'll stay in place.

I started to run out of space inside and the plants needed more light. So we used a hole in the orchard (originally intended to grow mushrooms) for a couple of grow boxes. It worked very well, they got more light and were sheltered from the horrible wind.

Of course harvesting is very difficult 2 ft below ground level and I ended up moving the plants to the Collectors Corner in Meadview where I'm now renting a little room to sell plants and supplies.

1/2 inch hardware cloth kept the plants safe from critters:

5 Things You Need to Know About Beneficial Bacteria:

.... Beneficial bacteria break down nutrients and minerals into smaller parts that plant roots can absorb more easily. These bacteria are an important part of the carbon and nitrogen cycles and increase nitrogen fixation in the soil.

According to the Annals of Microbiology, beneficial bacteria can also synthesize certain compounds, like hormones, that are good for plants.

They can have either a direct beneficial impact or an indirect beneficial impact on plants, depending on the type of bacteria present and its mechanism. ...

A very interesting article:
http://www.hortidaily.com/arti.....ifferences

... Baras has focused his research trials on Pre-Empt, a plant-derived organic fertilizer which has blackstrap molasses as its major component. He has been comparing organic vs. traditional fertilizers in several hydroponic production systems, including flood-and-drain grow racks, two different nutrient film technique (NFT) systems, deep water culture floating rafts and a ZipGrow Tower system.

“We have successfully grown butterhead lettuce and basil in all of these systems using organic inputs,” he said. “We have several other crops that we are running through these systems in smaller trials, including spinach, cilantro, arugula, strawberries and other lettuce and herb varieties. Most of research is still focused on butterhead lettuce and basil. ...

I found a 2.5 gallon bottle of Pre-empt for $52 at http://hortamericas.com/catalo.....tilizer-2/

Sadly, shipping would be $34.55 -- from Florida. I'm going to have to find a local source, maybe in Vegas, now that cannabis is legalized and everybody is growing.

I'd also be very interested in Terra Bella, but $225/gallon! And the microbes would probably die before I used it all.

I had a $77 order as prices are VERY good at Hort Americas, but shipping would have been $105.77!

I'm VERY glad to see organic options, just have to get a closer source.

I don't know what to do with the chemical fertilizer water when I'm done with a tub. Don't want to pollute my organic gardens. Toilet? Seems like a giant waste.

It sure would be cool to be organic and to be able to use the old water in the gardens.

10/10/17 UPDATE after exactly 2 weeks:

On 9/26 I started a nice mix of seeds in a sheet with 200 rock wool cubes:

The missing rows were the seeds that first germinated:

Salad bowl lettuce, lemon basil and mustard.

I moved them into the grow tub with the fertilizer solution.

You can see the empty pots with some coco coir for the next round of seedlings. Not sure that was a good idea.

Note the MANY holes I drilled into this lid - as many as I could fit. Incredibly, the lid is still very strong, no chance of breakage unless you drive over it or something.

I'm going to grow MANY seedlings and as they get larger, I'll distribute them to lids with more space for the plants and I might try transplanting them into dirt too. And I'll need quite a few for the local testers.

There are numerous seedlings in each pot and I plan to take them carefully apart in the next few days. If they're too close together, I might let two or three grow or just cut the extras off. Will have to experiment to see what works best.

The largest seedlings:

Seeds started on 10/4 in coco coir.

Rock wool is rather pricey and I happened to have an unopened block if coco coir that had been sitting around at least a year.

To my unpleasant surprise, it smelled like electrical burn, melted insulation, YUK! I don't remember this stench from when I used it before, wonder if it's from sitting in the plastic packaging so long. The entire room reeked for several days, but it's ok now. Makes you wonder though.

I wish I could grow entire flats for one plant because the seeds sprout at different times, but I need VARIETY and had so many lettuce and herb seeds. Divided in approximate thirds:

The roots and the fertilizer solution.

On 10/3 I moved the seedlings into this tub with fresh tab water and fertilizer and I'm wondering how this will work without pumps and filters. Already there's a sheen on the top, there was some stuff from the fertilizer at the bottom and most of the "dirt" is the coco coir that I added to the empty pots in preparation for moving more seedlings over.

I'll do some testing with using grey and black tubs and lids, see how less light impacts.

Looks like coco coir is less than ideal and I'll try peat moss.

My tap water was 228 ppm.

I added 3 teaspoons of the lettuce fertilizer and 3 teaspoons of the Cal/Mag to 4 gallons of water:

1522 ppm and EC 2911 (have to read up on EC, have no idea what it means.)

I added another half gallon of water:

1395 ppm and EC 2950. As ppm goes down, EC increases?

I should have added a full gallon for 5 gallons total so that all pots are IN water. I lost a few seedlings when I forgot to water one morning. I've been watering all the seeds twice a day as it's quite warm in that room on sunny days. And while at it, I also watered the growbox seedlings as there's not a lot of rockwool in some of the pots or they're not in water. I think it won't matter once they have roots reaching the water, although the rock wool should probably stay wet too.

So I'll update here later this week with new measurements, some info on fertilizer and EC and of course pics!

As always, I greatly appreciate any tips, don't have to make every possible mistake myself 🙂

As I've been visiting Meadview gardeners I realized that it's just TOO HARD for many seniors to grow outdoors. Even with a raised bed (like a table) and automatic irrigation almost everything died over the summer.

So I've been looking at Mike Adams' Food Rising Grow Boxes again, here are his latest videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_IHObR0nyg

It all looks great, but I'm not paying $130!

Tubs, lids, floats, waterline and rock wool arrived this week. Had to do quite a bit of research, but BPA free sturdy polyethylene is widely available.

I also ordered lettuce fertilizer and Cal Mag from Adams, hoping it REALLY will be CLEAN fertilizer.

Chemical fertilizers do not appeal to me, but for hydroponics there's no alternative, can't just throw some cow manure in the tubs. I have a PPM meter, not sure about EC.

There is a learning curve and I just hope I'll have the time to properly DOCUMENT my tests.

I want to compare how salad and herbs grow in water and in the ground. Of course I want most of my plants to be established in my gardens, but I'm also really tired of NOT having salad in summer -- when I could almost live on it.

Had volunteer cilantro in March and it quickly went to seed. The timing is so off.

Tomorrow is seed planting day -- a good day for leaf plants according to the biodynamic calendar. I'll update with some pics soon.

How WHOLE Turmeric Heals The Damaged Brain

http://www.greenmedinfo.com/bl.....ed-brain-1

Long considered impossible to accomplish, new research reveals how a simple spice might contribute to the regeneration of the damaged brain.

Turmeric is hands down one of the, if not the, most versatile healing spice in the world with over 600 experimentally confirmed health benefits, and an ancient history filled with deep reverence for its seemingly compassionate power to alleviate human suffering.

...

In the subsequent discussion it was stated that OIL has to be used to get the benefits and here is the recipe:

1/2 cup (about 75g) powdered turmeric
1 cup water with a cup in reserve
1/3 cup (70ml) oil (virgin olive oil, cold pressed coconut oil, or linseed oil)
1-1/2 to 3 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper

Combine the turmeric powder and water in a small saucepan and simmer for 7-10 minutes, adding more water as necessary to keep the paste from getting too thick. I always end up using the whole two cups.

Take the pan off the heat and let the mixture cool down to just warm. Stir in the oil and pepper, mixing thoroughly. After it's completely cool, store in the fridge. I use a wide-mouth pint canning jar, but the specific container isn't as important as being able to cover it.

This will keep for roughly two weeks. Unless you're feeding a household, you won't use it up within two weeks. Most people freeze half of it to begin with.

Start off with 1/4 tsp twice a day in food. After 4-5 days, if you're doing okay with that much, you can slowly increase the amount and/or frequency of use. Turmeric only stays in the body for about 4-6 hours, even with the pepper added, so little and often is better than larger amounts less often.

Apparently people are using various amounts of the paste, but you should start slow and see how your stomach reacts.

Using FRESH GROUND pepper seems to be very important.

There is a highly recommended Facebook group about Turmeric:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/415313751866609/

I couldn't check out the group because I don't do Facebook due to their marketing and lack of privacy and I really don't need any "virtual" friends since I have a very busy REAL life. If you do Facebook, check it out.

Ginger also was mentioned at the Yahoo group and while I'm not a Yahoo fan either, I have the posts emailed and it's definitely worth my while.

I'm off to make my first turmeric paste.

Mark emailed me his recipe:

Ingredients:

- Several squashes of whatever variety, split and de-seeded. My faves are typically buttercup and butternut. I recommend cutting off a tiny bit of the stem end to make splitting them easier.

- 1-2 large onions roughly chopped, depending on how much squash you have. I used 2 for my batch.

- about half a head of garlic

- 2-4 carrots roughly chopped

- 4 inches or so of ginger, cut into slices

- 3 whole cloves

- curry powder, cayenne pepper, garam masala, nutmeg, cinnamon, or any other warming spice or spice mix. if you have any hot chilies on hand, you can use those, too. Red finger, habanero, fresno, bird's eye, bhut jolokia, ghost chili, fresh cayenne, trinidad scorpions would all be excellent additions depending on how hot you want it.

- 1-2 cans of coconut milk or coconut cream, depending on how rich and creamy you want it

- about a cup of masoor dal, aka red/orange lentils

- vegetable stock or water. I used both.

Procedure:

Oil and lightly salt the flesh side of the squash, then place cut side down in a pan and roast at 350F until soft and scoopable (easily pierced with a steak knife). toss onions, garlic, carrots, ginger and chilies if you're using them with oil and a little salt, and then roast until golden-brown and tender. You may need to stir this mix occasionally to prevent the bottom from burning and to encourage even browning. Scoop the flesh of the roasted squash into a pot and add roasted onion mix and all remaining ingredients. Simmer until everything is very soft, then puree and adjust salt and spices to taste. You could save the seeds and roast them as a crunchy garnish for your soup, especially since you're going to be using the oven anyway.

I loved this squash soup and can't wait to have some more!
